![]() When the EBU introduced the song contest in 1956, the first event took place in Switzerland, which ultimately won the competition. Dean Vuletic, a historian of contemporary Europe focused on Eurovision, explained to the Bulletin that the EBU has traditionally sought to distinguish itself from the EU in order to attract more Euro-skeptic nations like Switzerland and the United Kingdom. While they are often considered as two sides of the same coin today, the EBU was created largely as a technical project to broadcast television programs across Europe, regardless of nation-states. Consequently, in 1951 the French Foreign Minister, Robert Schuman, unveiled a plan to place French and German production of coal and steel under a “ High Authority” known as the European Coal and Steel Community, which would ultimately morph into the European Union. ![]() After the first and second world wars, global powers sought to ameliorate Europe’s history of extreme nationalism and conflict-in particular, between Germany and France. ![]() Eurovision traces its origins to the 1950s, emerging alongside, but apart from, other European unification efforts. Spanning post-World War 2 recovery, the Cold War, and post-Cold War realignment, the contest is consistently at the forefront of the political and cultural battles that have come to define the modern age. As the contest has expanded around the world, the performances, voting patterns, and sensibilities have become a showcase of geopolitical soft power dynamics. The performances range from straight-laced ballads to monster-clad heavy metal, and offer huge potential boosts to participants’ careers: ABBA and Celine Dion exploded in popularity and went into megastardom after winning the contest.ĭespite organizers’ efforts to restrict political expression, Eurovision has become an effective forum for voicing political dissent. This means that several countries outside of the boundaries of Europe have participated, including Australia, Israel, and Morocco. Eligibility is based on membership in the European Broadcasting Union (EBU), “an alliance of public service media,” rather than geographic location or association with the European Union. For the uninitiated, the Eurovision Song Contest is an annual international music competition where participating countries send a musician or group to perform an original song on live television.

In 1738, a British mariner named Robert Jenkins displayed a severed, decomposing ear before the members of Parliament. By the end of the attack, the riots had been quelled and some 30,000 members of the mob lay dead around the grounds of the hippodrome. After bribing the Blues to gain their support, the emperor launched a devastating assault on the remaining hooligans. Faced with a full-scale revolution, Justinian finally resolved to put down the rebellion by force. ![]() In a few short days, they had burned the headquarters of the city prefect, clashed with imperial guards and even attempted to crown a new emperor. In a rare instance of unity, the two factions banded together and began to riot. These ancient hooligans acted more like street gangs than sports fans, and the most powerful groups-known as the Blues and the Greens-became notorious for their barbarism.Ĭonflict erupted in January 532, when Emperor Justinian refused to release two members of the Blues and Greens who had been condemned to death. The races held at Constantinople’s hippodrome had soared in popularity during the sixth century, and fans had organized themselves into strict factions. In 532 AD, massive mobs flooded the streets of Constantinople, burning large parts of the city and nearly toppling the government of the Emperor Justinian-and all of it in the name of chariot racing. ![]() The two nations would finally negotiate a deal allowing for joint military occupation of San Juan Island in October 1859, ending the Pig War as a bloodless stalemate-save for one unfortunate hog. The aptly named Pig War nearly saw an argument over a slaughtered swine lead to a full-scale conflict between the United States and Great Britain. ![]() Horn described cyberspace as the most erotic medium because of the anticipation and thrill that messaging provided. She picked the NYU program because it had “telecommunications” in the title, so Mobil would cover it as a work-related expense. Her boss suggested that obtaining a graduate degree would help Horn climb the corporate ladder, and while her interests were shifting toward writing, she thought graduate school sounded exciting. She got the impression they thought the idea was laughable, and the answer was a firm no. “I would stake my entire future that this is going to be the thing,” Horn enthusiastically told the team of corporate men about her plan. ![]() Week after week, she’d pitch the idea of “computer conferencing,” an efficient strategy to manage machines in different time zones that would post updates to one continuously synced document. When I met with her to discuss its origins, she had a neatly trimmed bob with bangs and wore denim jeans with a fitted black T-shirt-conjuring both Steve Jobs and downtown “it girl.” She said the idea for ECHO came out of her day job as a telecommunications analyst at Mobil, where she was the only woman in her department. Horn, who is now 66, still lives in the same West Village apartment that was her home when she launched ECHO. ECHO was a blueprint for the larger-scale social networks that we see today, and it serves as a reminder that behind all networks are people, with a lot of words to exchange. They would forever transform their lives in a way that wouldn’t otherwise have been possible, all while making a lasting mark on New York’s budding tech community. Through the evolution of this ecosystem, users would meet one another and contribute to the changing digital economy by starting businesses and cultural programming. What she ended up making was a hotbed of culturally minded early internet enthusiasts-a social network before there was a term for that. She craved a destination like the vibrant and artistic 20th-century salons of Gertrude Stein’s era, where users could exchange ideas and meet one another while getting lost in discussion.įREDERICK DUPOWERS MAGAZINE FROM THE COLLECTION OF MIT LIBRARIES Users congregated in interest-based forums, but Horn found most of them to be male-centric, heavy in technical jargon, and, just like the WELL, centered on the West Coast. When ECHO was founded, the World Wide Web was still being invented, and browsers weren’t a thing. Just as the WELL brought together experimental, self-sufficient individuals who foresaw the endless possibilities of computers, ECHO defined the New York web scene and influenced the design of contemporary social networks, creating lifelong friendships in the process. Brand is well known for being a counterculture impresario in the Bay Area during the 1960s, editing the widely distributed Whole Earth Catalog. One primary source of inspiration was the California-based online community known as the WELL (for “Whole Earth ’Lectronic Link”), started by Stewart Brand in 1985. ![]() Horn enlisted her graduate school friends (she was a recent graduate of New York University’s interactive telecommunications program), as well as members of other bulletin-board-style platforms. ![]() Members had to meet two requirements: they had to be geeky enough to navigate a cumbersome, text-based digital platform in the early days of the internet, but culturally in tune enough to foster the types of conversations you might hear at a West Village dinner party. ECHO stands for “East Coast Hang Out,” and when Horn founded it, she wanted to create a digital space that was social and unequivocally New York. Try to keep them from showing black or white. I typically do minimal processing on the RAW file within RawTherapee and focus my edits within GIMP. After conversion to TIFF and edits, you’ll end up converting to a lossy format, such as JPEG, for your final format before delivery. Keep this in mind for the amount of photos you intend to edit/deliver. RAW files take some time and effort to develop and convert to a lossless target format, like TIFF. Make sure you have the storage capacity and also that your backup storage location has enough capacity for your long-term storage needs. RAW files are large in size and require ample storage. While this wasn’t one of my 9 LOL’s, I found it kinda funny that Noah and his seven family members repopulated the entire world. “Only eight people-Noah and his family-are saved … in the whole world!” Hoth included the following on a special ‘Did You Know’ page about the Flood and Noah’s Ark: Now while the Bible is not a comedy, I actually laughed out loud an impressive 9 times. It was a breeze and delight to get through! Hoth for not only boiling the Bible down to a digestible 795 comic book pages, but also for dumbing it down. It’s, “God’s Word brought to life in pictures.” Many thanks to Mrs. Thank God for The Picture Bible by Iva Hoth, with illustrations by Andre LeBlanc. Any book over 250 pages sounds like a chore to a person of my academic level, so there was no fucking way in Hell that I was actually gonna read the real deal. Having said that, the Bible is like 10,000 pages long with a font so tiny that you need a magnifying glass to read it. The Bible is billed as, “The world’s most awesome story ever.” While that designation unquestionably belongs to Pee-wee’s Big Adventure, I figured that it was about time to strip down to my skivvies and dive into arguably the most important and influential book ever written, to see what all the fuss was about. It's also a great stepping stone or jumping off point into making children want to read The Bible.Īll in all, I really enjoyed reading The Picture Bible – it was an ambitious project trying to illustrate the entire Bible and to bring it to life and I think that it was a great success! I would recommend it to anyone with or without young children or just a child at heart. While attempting to read the Bible could be intimidating, The Picture Bible seems less so, despite its 800-page length. I also think that it's very helpful to those who are visual learners of any age. André Le Blanc should be commended for bringing the characters alive with his art, which was beautifully rendered and very vibrant.Īlthough the target audience is for young children, boys in particular, I found myself loving it just as much. ![]() My godson, who I read this with, wouldn't want to put it down and go to sleep and tried to stay up to continue reading it. The art was consistent enough throughout the book and done well to keep the attention of their target audience. The art was done rather well, nothing spectacular or super-realistic, but not overly simplified or cartoonish either – it was the perfect mix. Iva Hoth should be commended for writing a faithful and compelling text that stood the test of time. The Minor Prophets, epistles and the heavily metaphoric Revelations were mentioned in passing, but more importantly they were mentioned. The text covers the majority of The Bible from Genesis to Revelations – not word for word, but you get a general idea or overview of the text – the spirit of The Bible you can say. The Picture Bible is The Holy Bible done in graphic novel format and done remarkably well. While the mouse pointer is still integral to most desktop operating systems today, you have plenty of choices when it comes to moving that pointer around.
