Try to keep them from showing black or white. These will turn your image white or black depending on how much adjustment has been made. There are probably features or better/faster ways of completing tasks in RawTherapee. Any images of GIMP are also on Mac Catalina with version 2.10.32. I don’t have those other versions to know of any differences, so hopefully it’ll be the same for the other applications. The images may differ based on the version or operating system you are using. There is a new version, 5.9, however it is not available for Mac at this point. This post was written with RawTherapee version 5.8 on Mac OS Catalina. That’s cool and you should do what works best for you and your goals/visions. You have a lot of options as to the things you would like to address within RawTherapee, and you may come up with a different workflow than I present. I tend to focus on the overall exposure only, then export the file so that I can make any other edits within GIMP. I typically do minimal processing on the RAW file within RawTherapee and focus my edits within GIMP. After conversion to TIFF and edits, you’ll end up converting to a lossy format, such as JPEG, for your final format before delivery. Keep this in mind for the amount of photos you intend to edit/deliver. RAW files take some time and effort to develop and convert to a lossless target format, like TIFF. Make sure you have the storage capacity and also that your backup storage location has enough capacity for your long-term storage needs. RAW files are large in size and require ample storage. I realize that this approach may not be applicable or desired by each photographer, but that is how I shoot. I shoot with a Canon T3i in RAW + jpeg mode most of the time so that I have the option of each snap being in RAW and full quality if I need it. ![]() There are many debates and discussions about the topic and its pros and cons all over the internet and YouTube. This post is not going to go into details about the hows or whys of RAW files and why you may want to consider shooting your photos in RAW format. Both work great for me, so be sure to try both out to see how your workflow can go. Sometimes I use darktable and others RawTherapee.
